Less than a month to go until our first production "Montserrat meets the World", it’s now time to get hands-on advertising the event in as many ways as possible to make sure we spread the word far and wide.
First step: find the right person to create the poster.
I decided to give this task to a friend of mine who's a very talented designer. She didn't need much information to come up with a beautiful illustration inspired by the theme of the show. The island's shape seems to suggest a musical instrument, whose strings are actually branches where a bird rests, while another one dares to fly away. These birds are both orioles, which is the national bird of Montserrat and it can be found up on the hills. (Thanks Joana Costa for all your enthusiasm while creating this poster!)
Second step: sort out the ticket-selling system, making it as simple as possible.
After designing and printing the tickets, make sure they’re delivered to the indicated spots where they'll be available to be purchased.
Third step: record an ad to promote the event on the local radio.
For this one I asked the children’s choir to record a few melodies, singing the title of the production as well as a few other enthusiastic call outs. On the following day, 5 volunteers from the teen’s choir recorded the text with the core information for the ad. After a few sound-editing magic tricks it’s ready to go on air!
Forth step: drive through the whole island to find the best spots to leave the posters.
This is definitely the funny part as we always bump into familiar faces or get to answer to curious questions about the event.
Next steps: decide on the dress code, visit the venue, try the projection, sort out staging, light design, soundchecks, dress rehearsals, transportation... I strongly suspect the coming weeks will get busier and busier and we'll get to the big day in the blink of an eye.
